Lack of speech, blockage of thought

Lack of speech, blockage of thought

Erjon Uka / In the conditions of the pandemic, apart from the doctors' advice, articles, spots in the traditional media, someone took care to quickly make a small change to give the idea that putting on the mask is something comfortable and normal: the emoji that represented a masked face, turned from a grim symbol to a cheerful figure. You have probably used it, or need to update to the latest version of Whatsapp.

One of the most important interventions in the public debate of recent weeks has been that of Professor Christophe Clavé, who commenting on the decline in the level of intelligence in the most developed countries, attributed this fact in part to the general impoverishment of the language we use.

The disappearance of the study of subordinate or participle forms, along with a kind of urgency of thought, where everything must be found quickly, must be seen in a video tutorial of a few minutes, the simplicity of looking for even the most complicated things with just a few keywords , where a feeling is not expressed with a sentence but with an emoji in chat, they have impoverished the language used and consequently the thought.

Language is an identity and a culture, but it also directly affects the way we think. Without the word, it is difficult to build an opinion, to open a new path of reasoning, to give life to a concept. How many times are cases of violence a direct consequence of a lack of ability to construct an opinion and express it?

If everything that worries us happens now, if we are focused on the moment and not the period, if the conditional and the desirable are not known, everything remains hostage to the present. The question Clavé posed was right: how can a deductive or hypothetical thought be constructed afterwards? So thought and word always go together: a rich vocabulary, paves the way for new, numerous, creative and deductive thoughts. A little raw dictionary… quite the opposite.

There are over 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, and many studies have shown that they directly affect the way people who speak these languages think. But almost every week a language disappears and by some estimates, by the turn of the next century, almost half of the languages we know today will be gone. Technology has no way of not having a pretty big part in this. The emoji has gotten the attention it deserves.

But we need the word, we need the times, the genders, the nuances of colors, the numbers, the concepts, the feelings, we have to think in the future, to go back to the past through verbs and tenses, and only then the word will return to thought, thought in action, actions in freedom. The word was first. The word must remain first.
