The year 2024, the hottest in history

Copernicus, the European climate service, considers 2024 to be the hottest year ever recorded in history.

António Guterres, the head of the UN, described the record as "climate disruption".

"We need to get off this path to ruin and we have no time to waste," he said, calling for a reduction in emissions of gases that warm the planet.

Global average temperatures for 2024 were about 1.6C above pre-industrial levels. This breaks the record set in 2023 by just over 0.1C.

The Met Office, NASA and other climate groups will also release their data today, but the result is expected to be the same. 2024 was the hottest year on record.
