Former NATO general Petr Pavel is the new Czech president. Petr Pavel was unknown to the Czech public opinion until a few years ago, but in the last elections in the country he won about 58% of the votes against the populist oligarch Andrej Babis who managed to get 42% of the votes.
From communist soldier to NATO
61-year-old Petr Pavel was a member of the Communist Party before the change, like most professional soldiers. His training also includes training for the information services and the Czechoslovak army. After 1990, Pavl continued his education and made a career. He studied in American and British schools, including international relations. Pavl became known as a soldier while serving in the NATO troops in the former Yugoslavia. In 1993, he led an operation in which 50 French soldiers were rescued from a war zone between Serbs and Croats in eastern Croatia. After that Pavel was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor in France and the Medal of Heroes of the Czech Republic. His career continued with his appointment as Chief of General Staff of the Czech Army. In 2018, Pavel retired as a soldier.
Three years of preparation
In 2019, Pavel began preparations for the presidential campaign, before announcing his candidacy. He started traveling the country and talking to citizens about his experience in the army, defense issues and his life giving many interviews. During the Covid pandemic, during which the Czech Republic was among the countries with the highest number of deaths per population, Pavel created a team of experts that tried to consult the government with scientific advice. At this time, it started to be said that Petr Pavel wants to run for president. In the polls, he was favored until Andrej Babis announced his candidacy.

Andrej Babis
68-year-old Andrej Babis congratulated Pavel on his victory. Regarding his political future as deputy and leader of the opposition movement ANO, he did not express himself clearly.
