Greek government initiative, up to 50% subsidy for each household to purchase

The Greek government has taken an initiative to facilitate its citizens in reducing electricity bills. Through a decision the government has committed to provide subsidies to households to help them replace electrical appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners with new energy efficient appliances, thus reducing rising electricity bills.

"Greek households will be able to buy up to three new appliances, more energy efficient, air conditioners, refrigerators or freezers and will receive a subsidy of 30% to 50% of the cost for each appliance. "According to the program we are announcing today, we are giving hundreds of thousands of families the opportunity to significantly reduce, up to 40%, their energy consumption", said the Minister of Energy, Costas Skrekas.

Greece will be able to save energy equal to that consumed by a city of 100,000 inhabitants per year and save 40m euros in gas and oil imports per year. The initiative is expected to cost 150m euros and will be funded by EU funds.

Since last year, the country has taken several measures at a total cost of about 7 billion euros, including subsidies to help families pay their electricity bills and pump up fuel.
