About 80,000 tourists are stranded in the popular resort city of Sanya on China's tropical island of Hainan after authorities announced new restrictive measures to curb an outbreak of Covid-19.

Public transport was suspended and people's movements within the city were restricted since Saturday morning. Stranded tourists are required to stay for seven days and undergo five tests for Covid-19 before leaving.

The restrictions come at the height of the summer tourism season for the island province, a popular destination often called China's Hawaii for its sandy beaches, rainforests and high-end hotels.

Over 80% of flights departing from Sanya were canceled on Saturday, according to data from flight tracking company Variflight. All trains departing from Sanya were also cancelled, state broadcaster CCTV said on Saturday.
