Was ice on the wings the cause of the plane crash in Brazil?

Brazilian authorities are looking for answers to the causes of the crash of the ATR-72 Voepass plane, an accident in which 61 people lost their lives.

According to the website FlightRadar24, in the area where the twin-engine plane, with 57 passengers and a crew of four, was flying, there was a warning of a "serious possibility of icing" at altitudes between 3,657m and 6,400m.

What phenomenon is this?

Water droplets that freeze and collect on wings and propellers can cause problems with aircraft performance.

For their part, Voepass' director of aviation services said that despite the ice forecasts, they were within acceptable limits.

The twin-engine ATR-72 was on a flight from Cascavel to Guarulhos Airport in São Paulo. The last signal received by the plane was about an hour and a half after takeoff.

The plane crashed in the yard of a house, but no residents were injured in the crash.
