Australia quarantines bees

Millions of honey bees have been quarantined in the state of New South Wales in Australia due to the discovery of a parasite called varroa.

"Varroa" was first found in a port near Sydney last week, but has since been spotted in a hive 100km away.

The spread threatens to cost the honey industry and food production millions of dollars.

Australia was the only continent without the parasite, which is the biggest threat to bees worldwide.

Graves weaken and kill colonies by feeding on them and transmitting viruses.
