Seven families in France have taken TikTok to court, accusing the platform of exposing their teenage children to harmful content that resulted in two of them committing suicide.
The suit alleges that TikTok's algorithm exposed the seven teenagers to videos promoting suicide, self-harm and eating disorders, the families' lawyer said.
"Parents want TikTok's criminal responsibility to be recognized in court. It is a commercial company that offers a product to consumers, who, moreover, are minors. Therefore, they must be held responsible for product defects," said the lawyer in a statement to the media.
TikTok, like other social media platforms, has long faced scrutiny over content control on its app.
