Florida passes law banning social media use by children under 16

Florida became the first US state and the first in the world to pass a bill banning children under 16 from using social media.

The bill in Florida, which was approved by the Senate, passed yesterday in the House of Representatives of the state, with 108 votes in favor and 7 against. Now it's up to Gov. Ron DeSandis to deliver the final verdict, signing the bill into law.

If DeSandis signs the bill, social media companies would be required to ban children under 16 from having an account on their platforms and shut down existing ones.

But he has previously expressed reservations. "Parents have the right to express their opinion," said DeSandis during a press conference yesterday. In January, DeSandis warned that the bill could be thrown out by the courts, noting that similar initiatives in other states have been blocked in court.
