Excavations during the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral have uncovered thousands of centuries-old artifacts. The devastating fire that nearly consumed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in April 2019 opened a unique window into history.
During the five-year restoration process, archaeologists had an extraordinary opportunity to excavate beneath this iconic building, uncovering over 1,000 fragments of historical artworks that were previously hidden.
This excavation process was made possible by the French law on preventive archaeology, which allows the study of archaeological remains that might otherwise be lost due to construction.
