A 25-year-old woman in China with type 1 diabetes began producing her own insulin less than three months after receiving a reprogrammed stem cell transplant. She is the first person with the disease to be treated using cells taken from her own body.
Scientists reprogrammed her insulin-producing cells and transplanted them into her womb. Within 75 days, she began producing insulin independently, eliminating her need for insulin injections.
Over a year later, her glucose levels remained stable. While this success is promising, further trials are needed to confirm the long-term efficacy of this treatment.
