Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki dies at age 56

Susan Wojcicki, who helped found Google and was one of Silicon Valley's most prominent women executives as CEO of YouTube, died yesterday at the age of 56.

Her husband, Dennis Troper, said on social media that she had been battling lung cancer for two years.

"Susan was not just my best friend and partner in life, but a brilliant mind, a loving mother and a dear friend to many," he said. "Her impact on our family and the world was immeasurable."

They also lost their 19-year-old son 6 months ago.

Wojcicki left YouTube last year after nearly a decade leading the company. She was the only woman at the time running one of the major social media platforms.

She had been part of Google since the company's beginnings in the late 1990s — in her garage Larry Page and Sergey Brin began building what would become the tech giant — and was named head of YouTube in 2014. (Google bought YouTube in 2006.)
