Trump's sentence ends. Back to Facebook and Instagram

Facebook and Instagram has returned the former US president Donald Trump to the platforms. The punishment for him is over.

Trump was suspended from all social media after being accused of inciting violence at the protest and the attack on Capitol Hill.

Meta has made a long clarifying statement about Trump's departure and his return. Of course, what awaits him if the offense is repeated.

"Social media is rooted in the belief that open debate and the free flow of ideas are important values. As a general rule, we do not want to impede open, public, and democratic debate on Meta's platforms, especially in the context of elections in democratic societies like the United States. The public needs to be able to hear what their politicians have to say - the good, the bad and the ugly - so they can make informed choices at the ballot box. But that doesn't mean there are no limits to what people can say on our platform. When there is a clear risk of real-world harm Meta can act.

Two years ago, we took action in extreme and very unusual circumstances. We indefinitely suspended then-US President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts following his praise of the people involved in the violence against the Capitol on January 6, 2021. We then referred that decision to the Oversight Board—a body expert created as an independent control. The Board upheld the decision, but criticized the open-ended nature of the suspension and the lack of clear criteria for when and if suspended accounts would be reinstated, directing us to review the case to determine a more proportionate response.

In response to the Board, we imposed a time-limited suspension of two years from the date of initial suspension on January 7, 2021—an unprecedented length of time for such a suspension.

The suspension was an extraordinary decision taken in extraordinary circumstances. Now the suspension time period has passed.

In the event that Mr. Trump posts further infringing content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for one month to two years, depending on the violation," Meta's statement reads.
