Mitch McConnell announced that he plans to step down as the Senate's longest-serving Republican leader in November.
He has led his party in the Senate for nearly 20 years, but said it was time to leave, in a speech on Wednesday.
McConnell has been a conservative politician and the occasional pick of Republicans on Capitol Hill.
He was in favor of former President Donald Trump.
