Moderna calls for urgent vaccine approval in the US and Europe

Moderna Company has today filed a petition for the coronavirus vaccine to be approved by US and European health institutions for emergency and large-scale use. Moderina vaccine trials, known scientifically as the mRNA vaccine, are currently being analyzed and it is expected to be decided whether it is safe and effective to approve mass production and distribution.

So far the study has shown that the vaccine is more than 94% effective in protecting people from Covid-19 disease.

Meanwhile, Pfizer has also earlier requested the approval of the US to use the vaccine.

Moderna says it hopes to get quick approval in Britain after testing results were obtained from 30,000 volunteers, including high-risk groups such as the elderly. 15,000 of them made the real vaccine while the other participants received placebo injections. Thankfully no serious side effects were reported.

During the studies, 185 people in the placebo group became ill with Covid-19, and some of them became seriously ill.

For comparison, there were 11 cases in the group of those who did the vaccine and none of them became seriously ill. Full test details have not been released, but they are expected to be published soon.

What are the prices of the three vaccines?

AstraZeneca is cheaper - about $ 4 per dose, compared to about $ 20 for the Pfizer vaccine and $ 33 for the Moderna vaccine. The AstraZeneca vaccine is said to be easier to dispense because it does not need to be stored at very low temperatures. But its effectiveness in trials- between 62% and 90% is lower than Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The UK has already ordered doses of all three vaccines:

7 million doses Moderna

40 million from that Pfizer / BioNTech

100 million of the AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine

Dr Alexander Edwards, an associate professor at the University of Reading, told the BBC: "This is really great news because the more data we have, the more confident we are that vaccines can be used to reduce costs. human rights to Covid- 19 ".
