A suspected Chinese spy balloon is identified over the US! How does Beijing respond to this event?
A suspected Chinese spy balloon that was discovered in the US sky has raised concerns about national security and increased Washington-Beijing tensions, writes CNN.
The Pentagon said Friday that the balloon does not currently pose a military or political threat.
But on the other hand, the incident caused Secretary of State Antony Blinken to postpone his trip to China.
On Friday, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the balloon accidentally entered US airspace.
"It is a civilian plane that is used for research purposes, mainly meteorological. Affected by the westerly winds, the balloon deviated from the planned course," the spokesman said in a statement.
Some US lawmakers are calling on President Joe Biden to hold China accountable for what officials call an unacceptable violation of US sovereignty.
