Pope Francis is recovering in a Rome hospital after abdominal surgery.
"The night went well," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement on the Vatican press office's Telegram account.
The pope had a "restful night managing to rest for a long time" and is in "good general condition, alert and breathing easily", a Vatican spokesman told reporters on Thursday.
"The Pope has been informed of the messages of love that have arrived in the last few hours and expresses his gratitude, while at the same time asking him to continue to pray for her," the spokesman said.
The Pope will spend the rest of the day resting, as advised by his medical staff.
"This was not an emergency operation, but he was in pain," said Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who operated on Pope Francis, at a press conference.
