UN chief criticizes countries for lack of climate action: You have opened the gates of Hell

UN Secretary General António Guterres criticized world leaders for not taking measures to move away from fossil fuels at the climate summit being held in New York.
"We must make up for the time lost to the foot-dragging and greed that amasses billions from fossil fuels," Guterres told them. "Mankind has opened the gates of hell," he warned, noting that the world was on track for a temperature increase of 2.8 degrees Celsius.
In his speech, Guterres called on countries that had benefited most from fossil fuels to make an "extra effort" to cut emissions.
The most prominent speakers were German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and EU President Ursula von der Leyen, who brought more ambitious commitments to renewable energy.
China and the United States, the world's biggest polluters, as well as India and Japan did not speak at the summit.
