More than 1.2 million people died worldwide in 2019 from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the largest study done on the issue to date.

The poorest countries are most affected, but antimicrobial resistance threatens everyone's health, says the report, which recommends urgent investment in new drugs and wiser use of current ones to protect oneself.

Excessive use of antibiotics in recent years for minor infections means they become less effective against serious infections.

People are dying from common, previously treatable infections because the bacteria that cause them have become resistant to treatment.

Health officials in the UK recently warned that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was a "hidden pandemic" that could occur in the wake of Covid-19 if antibiotics are not given responsibly.

The AMR global death estimate, published in The Lancet, is based on an analysis of 204 countries by a team of international researchers led by the University of Washington, USA.

Most deaths from AMR were caused by lower respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia and circulatory infections, which can lead to sepsis.

Other experts say better tracking of resistance levels in different countries and regions is essential, and that global spending on treating AMR needs to rise to levels that are for other diseases.
