Tragedy in Mexico. 46 people suffocate inside a truck
46 people were found dead in a truck trailer on the southwest side and 16 others were transported to area hospitals.
"It's tragic," said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. "They had families ... and they were probably trying to make a better life. "It's nothing less than a terrible human tragedy." Everyone had started crossing the border into the USA.
"We hope that those responsible for putting these people in such inhumane conditions will be prosecuted according to the law," Nirenberg said.
Officials did not immediately confirm whether the victims were immigrants or locals.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said officers received a call 10 minutes before 6 p.m. Shouts of help were heard.
As the worker approached, he saw several bodies inside an 18-wheeled trailer with the doors partially open.
In the truck, among the victims were teenagers and young people.
Death is thought to have come from asphyxiation from high temperatures, lack of water and ventilation. 4 children managed to get out of the truck alive.
