MEP: Respect "June 5", unilateral changes affect Albania's EU

MEP David Lega commented on the political situation in Albania. Lega says that the unilateral amendments to the June 5 agreement are contrary to the OSCE / ODIHR recommendations and the European Council decision to open negotiations with Albania.

He adds that free and fair elections are an essential condition for EU membership.

"Unilateral changes at this stage are against the OSCE / ODIHR recommendations as well as the EU Council decision to open negotiations. The EPP Group urges the authorities to refrain from any unilateral change and to abide by the consensual agreement as committed. Free and fair elections are a basic precondition for EU integration. "The June 5 electoral reform was adopted by consensus and is supported internationally and must be implemented as agreed," Lega wrote in a Twitter post.

Earlier, the deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Johann David Wadephul, called on political parties in Albania to return to the consensus on electoral lists.

Wadephul called on Albania to reach a consensus in the Political Council on electoral reform, after the meeting he had in Berlin with the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj.

Meanwhile, a few hours ago, the representative of the majority in the Political Council, Damian Gjiknuri, sent an e-mail to the members of the Political Council, in response to the arguments provided in the e-mail sent on September 27 by Bylykbashi and Vasili. By e-mail, the meeting of the Political Council is requested on Thursday, October 1, at 11.00.
