Tirana and Taranto twinning agreement: More joint sports projects

Tirana and the Italian city of Taranto signed a twinning agreement for cooperation in the fields of sports and youth. The Mayor of Taranto, Rinaldo Melucci was received by the mayor Erion Veliaj to establish this new cooperation between the two cities. Veliaj emphasized the fact that Tirana, after the successful year as the European Capital of Youth, will continue next year with the title of European City of Sport and said that the cooperation with Taranto, the host city of the Mediterranean Games 2026, is more important .

"It is an extraordinary pleasure that we have a delegation from Taranto, who are in Tirana to concretize the twinning between our two cities. Next year Tirana will be the "European City of Sports", while in 2026 Taranto will host the "Mediterranean Games". I believe that we have not only the kindness of the two presidents, but also an excellent opportunity to cooperate, especially in the field of sports", said Veliaj.

For his part, the mayor Rinaldo Melucci said that the reason why Taranto asked for this cooperation was precisely the fact that Tirana is experiencing a rapid development.

"We are very happy to be here and thank you for your hospitality! As we were coming from the airport, we discovered a city under development, which we were aware of, but also because it was basically the reason why we asked for this twinning with Tirana - a new city, where a lot of investment is being made for modernization, for the development of sustainable, as well as for young people. Not in vain, we wanted to visit at the end of this year, when Tirana is the 'European Youth Capital'. We are happy because Taranto is also following more or less such a journey. It is an industrial city, which, as you know, has its "wounds", but which is striving towards modernization. It will host the Mediterranean Games in 2026.
