Mario Vargas Llosa / The end of the war is in the hands of the Russian people

Mario Vargas Llosa / The end of the war is in the hands of the Russian people

By Mario Vargas Llosa / Russian President Things are not going as he thought. First of all, the invasion of Ukraine has caused a negative backlash around the world, well exceeding the Kremlin's expectations. Nor did China, which Russia thought was on its side, openly support it: it is taking a cautious stance, which undoubtedly has to do with the hostile demonstrations that are taking place throughout the civilized world.

On the other hand, a few days after the start of the attack, Russian tanks have not yet managed to take control of Kiev, where a courageous and united people is resisting the invasion, although Russian supremacy will sooner or later reach its target. They have already started bombing residential neighborhoods and TV stations, clearly showing the lack of control. But it would take a real massacre to impose itself on an invincible and hostile people. It is clear that Russian soldiers will have difficult days in the near future. We have already seen on TV the corpses lying next to the combat vehicles, without anyone taking them.

The economic hardships imposed on Russia have had an immediate effect, and we have all seen the long (and equally vain) ranks of the Russian people seeking to withdraw money from ATMs to cope with daily expenses, as the ruble , after falling into the dive, began to disappear even from the banks. At the same time, Western banks have excluded Russian banks from the so-called Swift system, thus eliminating the possibility of making payments within the Russian banking system. All this has created an extremely difficult situation for the Russian population, which is facing a shortage of daily consumer goods and emptying of shelves in shops and supermarkets.

As for him, the reaction of the Russian people to the occupation was not as passive and enthusiastic as Putin would have predicted. We have seen large anti-war demonstrations in major cities, resulting in thousands of people ending up in prison. This means that the abusive occupation of Ukraine in favor of a very minority part of the Russians who would like to be united with the country as in the old days of Stalin, is far from the unifying representation of a divided people that despite threats from the government, still dares to protest against the war.

Moreover, the amount of grenades, weapons and forces that the West in general and Europe in particular are sending to Ukraine to support its defense significantly exceeds expectations. NATO member states that ensured neutrality on this issue were the first to break it by openly supporting Ukraine. And it's natural: Ukraine intimidates other European countries, which think that its occupation could be the beginning of a very clear plan, namely Putin's fixation on rebuilding the old Soviet system of satellite states and cities that will provided protection to Russia from any alleged Western attack. So the invasion of Ukraine enjoys all the hallmarks of a failed Russian government operation, from which Russia will emerge descriticized, perhaps even repentant. At the same time, industrialists at the helm of larger companies are raising their voices. It's something unusual, because for the most part they have amassed wealth thanks to their friendship with Putin. For example, Alexei Mordashov, considered Russia's richest man, just spoke openly criticizing the occupation.
