Gray divorce boom, why couples are breaking up after spending a lifetime

The analyzes that emerge from the ISTAT research in Italy speak clearly: between 2014 and 2020, divorces among couples over 55 tripled, and in six years the number of divorces among those in their 60s has almost doubled.

Finally, late-life divorce is no longer a taboo.

Neither the years spent together, nor the children, the challenges, the memories experienced are sufficient reasons to avoid divorce at this age.

What are the possible causes of this phenomenon?

"Late divorce is an event in line with the evolution of the couple's relationship," explained psychiatrist Giancarlo Dimaggio to La Repubblica.

"As a species, we have arrived at monogamy, that is, the formation of stable pairs, to ensure the development and security of children: our emotional, cerebral and hormonal architecture has evolved with the aim of caring for offspring. But once children grow up and caregiving tasks are completed , staying together is more of a cultural thing."

It can also be done by those who want separation, but need judgment or the beginning of a new life as singles.
