The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has said that in Kosovo there should not be a ban on headscarves and other religious elements in the public life of citizens.

"My position is that there should not be a ban on headscarves and other religious elements in the public life of citizens, but we should be free, but I also said that the age of 16 should be the threshold and the age of 16 we see it as a threshold for many things that have happened and should happen. Since you can get an ID card at the age of 16, if the system allows you to get married at the age of 16, since the average age is 35 and 2/3 of the population is under 35, I think that in the future it would be bad if the voting age were also 16 years old. We see the age of 16 as the threshold age for many things and also for wearing the headscarf.

This was the statement of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, which provoked a strong reaction in Kosovo, but also in Albania regarding what is considered a violation of the secular state, as this legitimizes the wearing of headscarves by girls in schools.

How did the debate begin?

Prime Minister Kurti's statement was prompted by a petition circulated online to change the Administrative Instruction that prohibits the wearing of religious uniforms in schools.

Administrative instruction issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in the Government of Kosovo in 2010, decided to prohibit the wearing of headscarves in primary and secondary schools in Kosovo.

"The Constitution of Kosovo should be and continues to be the primary orientation of the institutions of Kosovo for any issue that has to do with basic human rights and freedoms. This Constitution has defined a fundamental principle that is the fundamental principle on which our legal-constitutional system is built, it is the principle of secularity. Therefore, it is very important that the public institutions of Kosovo respect this principle", stated Osmani in the Conference with the President of Albania Bajram Begaj.

"As the president of the country, I will continue to demand that the principles on which not only our Constitution is built, but also our progressive society, which sees Euro-Atlantic principles and values as its foundation, be inspected," she added.
