Video/Serena Williams tears for family in final tennis match
Serena Williams bid farewell to the US Open and her illustrious career amid emotional scenes after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic on a thrilling night in New York.
It will end a 27-year professional career that brought 23 major victories and sees the American widely labeled as the greatest of all time.
Williams after this loss was touched with tears streaming down his face.
Almost everyone rose to their feet as she left the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the scene of her first major triumph in 1999 and five other career-best wins for what also happens to be last time.
As she waved and did a spin, Tina Turner's "Simply The Best" blared on the court.
Williams was overcome with emotion when interviewed, thanking her family and all her fans around the world for their support over the years.
"I thank all those who are here, who have been by my side for so many years, decades. Oh my god, literally decades. But it all started with my parents. And they deserve everything. So I am very grateful to them. I wouldn't be Serena if it wasn't for Venus, [sister] so thank you, Venus. She is the only reason Serena Williams ever existed,” Williams said.
