Afraid of flying? Why it happens and how to overcome it

The fear of flying is called aerophobia or aviophobia and quite a few people suffer. Although death from air accidents is at very low rates, the fear of these people does not ask for statistics.

But what causes the fear of flying?

The psychological origins of the fear of flying

A phobia is an intense fear or panic about certain activities, objects or situations. Specific phobic disorder, in this case related to flying, is a type of anxiety disorder whose psychological origin can be multiple:

Previous negative experiences. One of the causes of flying phobia can be a particularly difficult flight experience.

Substitute learning. When you hear someone talk about a plane crash or a flight with a lot of turbulence, you can imagine yourself in the same situation and this can turn into a fear of flying. So, the phobia of flying develops as a result of learning from the experience of others.

Incidence of other existing phobias. In some cases, the fear of flying manifests itself after the presence of another pre-existing concern such as acrophobia (fear of heights), agoraphobia (fear of open and crowded places) or claustrophobia (fear of closed places). These fears arise the moment you take a plane or fly.

Stress. A person may also develop a fear of flying after trauma or sustained periods of stress. Whether it's a move, a loss, an illness in the family, the end of a relationship, any impactful event in one's life can intensify anxieties and fears.

How to overcome the fear of flying

Whether group or individual, psychotherapy sessions can go a long way in overcoming the fear of flying. Then there are specific therapies thanks to which excellent results can be achieved.
