Six recent discoveries that have changed the way we think about our origins

The scientific study of human evolution has historically provided us with a comforting rule of thumb. He has described humans as smarter, more intellectual and more caring than our ancestors. But discoveries over the past 5 years have overturned this unbalanced view.

1. There are more human species than we previously imagined

Species such as Homo Longi were identified only in 2018. So far, 21 species of human beings are known. In recent years we have come to realize that our ancestors, Homo Sapiens, may have met up to 8 of these different types of humans, from the sturdy, tall species, including the Neanderthals and their close relatives the Denisovans, to the short (less than 1.65 meters long) and with a small brain like Homo Naledi.

2. Hybrid people are part of our history

Hybrid humanoid species, once viewed by experts as the spawn of science fiction, may have played a key role in our evolution. Evidence of their importance comes from genetics. The clue is not only in the DNA of our species (which includes important genes inherited from Neanderthals), but also in the skeletons of hybrid beings. An example is "Deni" a girl with a Neanderthal mother and Denisovan father. Her remains were found in a cave in Siberia.

3. We were lucky

Our evolutionary past is messier than scientists previously thought. Have you ever worried about back pain? Or do you look jealously behind your dog as he covered a greater distance than you? That should be enough to tell you that we are far from a perfect fit with the world.

We've known for some time that evolution cobbles together solutions in response to an ecosystem that may already have changed. But many of the changes in our human evolutionary line may be the result of chance.

For example, where isolated populations have a characteristic, such as an aspect of their appearance, that does not make much difference to their survival, this form continues to change in the offspring. Neanderthal facial features (such as their prominent eyebrows) or body (including large rib cages) may have simply come from genetic drift.

4. Our destiny is intertwined with nature

We are more sensitive to how the people around us feel, and we are more vulnerable to social influences, more prone to emotional disturbances, to loneliness and depression than our ancestors. Our complex feelings may not always be pleasant, but they are part of the major transformations that created large and interconnected communities. This is because our emotions are essential for human cooperation.
