Working for publishers such as Town & Country, Harper's Bazaar and Life magazine, the late photographer spent five decades taking candid pictures of aristocrats and their lifestyles. Whether relaxing in Italian villas, boating off the coast of Monaco or fox hunting in the English countryside, his subjects epitomized high society.

"The photographer's motive was neither to celebrate nor to criticize the wealth he encountered. He was driven by a journalistic curiosity about how the world's most privileged people lived," said Shawn Waldron, who wrote a book about Slim Aarons' life.

Photo agency Getty Images purchased Aarons' entire archive in 1997, a few years after his retirement.

At the time of the acquisition, Aarons was "kind of forgotten," Waldron added. But now, some 15 years after his death, experts and audiences are revisiting and reinterpreting the photographer's great work.
