Apple falls from the throne, here's who takes its place

Apple lost its lead in the global smartphone market in early 2024. iPhone sales fell 10% as lower-cost Chinese rivals such as Xiaomi experienced rapid growth.

Samsung regained its position as the world's largest smartphone maker in the first quarter of this year, according to market researcher International Data Corporation. This came just three months after Apple claimed the top spot for the first time ever.

IDC estimated that global iPhone shipments fell to 50.1 million in the first three months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. A good portion of the sales gap went to Samsung, with 21% which launched its latest version new Galaxy S24 in January.

It remains to be seen what Apple will do to recover.
