Technology will put translators out of work very quickly! This is what the AI translator will look like
Meta has released Seamless46, a model that translates 100 languages of the world. Seamless M46 is based on two projects: 'No Language Left Behind' and 'Universal Speech Translator'.
How does Seamless46 work?
The model translates from voice to voice, voice to text, text to voice and text to text. It can identify up to 100 languages.
Speech toxicity
With languages and dialects of distant cultures the danger is generating toxic content that can be offensive because it does not take into account the culture of a people. The human translator actually, in addition to the language, studies and prepares to explain what a person means taking into account a certain context.
SeamlessM4T contains a speech toxicity filter, precisely to approximate human-made translation.
Lexical poverty
One risk of the system is the fact that if we all use AI to translate automatically, we will move towards lexical impoverishment and a normalization of language. This would be a weak point, except for the fact that many translators would be out of a job.
