The beautiful reason behind this photo of 5,000 people waiting in the rain

This is no ordinary photo. It is an extraordinary testament to the strength of a community coming together to save a child's life.

In March 2019, nearly 5,000 people waited for hours in the rain at Pitmaston Primary School in Worcester to be tested at an event organised by the charity DKMS. The aim was to find a potential stem cell donor for a five-year-old boy, Oscar Saxelby-Lee, who was suffering from a rare form of cancer, acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Oscar's parents' call for help touched thousands of hearts and mobilized a crowd that was not deterred by the bad weather. This extraordinary response broke records in donation registrations, reaching nearly 6,000 participants.

Thanks to this solidarity, a suitable donor was found and Oscar successfully underwent a transplant, followed by further treatments in Singapore. Now, after more than six years free of cancer, Oscar has just celebrated his 12th birthday, a moment that would not have been possible without the support of people with big hearts.
