Pregnancy tests can come back positive in men too, but it's not good news

Did you know that if a man takes a pregnancy test, it may come out "positive", but the reason is not what you think.

Pregnancy tests do not detect "pregnancy" itself, but a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is normally produced during pregnancy.

In healthy men, this hormone is usually very low or undetectable. Therefore, in the vast majority of cases, a man who takes a pregnancy test will get a negative result.

But there is one important exception: in rare cases, a positive result in men can occur when the body produces abnormal amounts of hCG. This can be linked to several medical conditions, including some testicular tumors, which can increase the level of this hormone in the blood.

This does not mean that men naturally “test positive.” Rather, such a result is considered unusual and often requires medical examination to determine the cause.

At the end of the day, a pregnancy test doesn't "know" who is pregnant or not, it simply reacts to a hormone. And sometimes, that hormone can tell you more about your health than the pregnancy itself.
