'I want to die with dignity'. The story of the 25-year-old who shocked

A story that has touched all of Spain and beyond: Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old from Barcelona, has become a symbol of the debate over euthanasia and the right to decide over life and death.

In 2022, her life took a tragic turn. While staying at a state-run center for vulnerable youth, she was brutally attacked by a group of people. The trauma was so severe that, in a moment of despair, she attempted to end her life by jumping off a building.

She survived… but with lifelong consequences. Noelia was left paralyzed from the waist down and has since lived with constant pain, severe disability, and deteriorating mental health.

After two years of suffering, in 2024 she officially requested euthanasia. A medical commission unanimously approved the request. In Spain, since 2021, euthanasia and assisted suicide have been legal for people suffering from serious and incurable illnesses.

However, the story didn't end there. Her father legally intervened to stop the decision, arguing that her psychological state did not allow her to make such a decision.

He emphasized that the state has an obligation to protect life, especially when it comes to vulnerable people.

In a very emotional moment in court in 2025, Noelia addressed the judge directly with a simple but powerful request:

"I want to end this with dignity, once and for all."

This sentence became a symbol of debate across the country.

In February 2026, the country's highest court ruled in her favor, granting her the right to benefit from euthanasia.

However, objections continue. The conservative organization Abogados Cristianos has stated that it will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Noelia's case has sparked a strong debate:

Should a person have the right to choose the end of life?
Or should the state protect life in all circumstances?
