At the end of last year, news was made public about the arrival, in early 2026, of erotic chats on ChatGPT, that is, the possibility of having content and discussions of a sexual nature with artificial intelligence, reserved for adult and verified users. However, in recent days, it has been decided to stop the implementation of this project.
The reasons are varied, from ethical ones to practical and technical difficulties.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, its use has grown exponentially, becoming within a few months the most widely used artificial intelligence platform, with subscription options for additional features. In parallel with its spread, debates about the ethics, uses, and safety of AI have also increased.
These debates intensified further when, during the DevDay 2025 event in October, CEO Sam Altman announced the possibility of an adult version of ChatGPT. The idea was to create a section where adult users could discuss topics like sex and eroticism, with fewer restrictions than currently.
The plan also included a new age verification system to ensure that only adults and identified users could access this content. According to Altman, this would give users more freedom to choose how to use AI.
But the main question remains: are these conversations safe? Since the moment of announcement, the project has raised many questions, both from the public and from within the company. Some see it as an expansion of opportunities for adult users, others as a serious risk, especially for young people.
Although parental control tools have been proposed, allowing for monitoring and limiting usage by minors, safety concerns remain. Parents and experts are skeptical not only about this feature, but about the overall impact of the platform.
According to reports from the Financial Times, OpenAI has decided to suspend the project indefinitely until the right conditions are created. One of the main reasons is related to the ethical aspect: investors and employees have expressed concerns about the social impact of an AI that generates sexual content without full control.
There are also fears that these conversations could foster emotional dependence on AI and create ambiguous relationships with the technology. So far, clear studies on the long-term effects and potential risks are lacking.
In addition, there are technical challenges. Current systems are built specifically to filter such content, and adapting them to allow it only for a group of users is very complex. Testing has shown that filtering responses in a secure and reliable way remains difficult.
Another big problem is age verification.
In the end, too many risks and too few safety guarantees led to the project being shelved. And perhaps the simplest question remains: was it really necessary, at a time when sexual content is now easily accessible, even to minors?
