'The Late Show' closes after 11 years due to lack of funding

After more than a decade on screen, Stephen Colbert ended his adventure at the helm of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The final episode aired on the evening of May 21, marking the end of one of the most popular formats on American television.

The final night came amid emotions, jokes and surprises, as Colbert thanked the audience and staff who accompanied him during the 11 years of the show. He expressed gratitude for the time he spent leading the program, calling it a great privilege.

The final episode featured appearances by such household names as Paul McCartney, Jon Batiste, and Elvis Costello. One of the most talked-about moments of the night was the performance of the song Hello, Goodbye, which was seen as a symbol of the end of an era in American television.

Previously, CBS had announced that the program would end in May 2026, linking the decision to financial costs and the transformations that the late night broadcast industry is undergoing.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert launched in 2015, after Colbert took over the format following the departure of David Letterman.
