In France, donkeys are helping patients with mental health problems

A hospital near Paris has found a unique way to help patients with depression, anxiety, autism and schizophrenia: donkey therapy.

The program has been running since 2016 and is considered the only one of its kind in France. Patients spend time with the donkeys, walking them, caring for them and interacting with them, which doctors and nurses say helps reduce stress, loneliness and improve self-esteem.

Many patients say that they feel calmer and more relaxed after the sessions. Hospital staff emphasize that animal therapy does not replace medication, but can be an important aid in the healing process.

Due to positive results, the program has been expanded to include other animals such as rabbits, turtles, goats, and birds.
