Tirana is decorated for Valentine's Day with hearts, couples, lights and romantic installations on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard. Amidst all this atmosphere, two girls sending hearts through the crowd were seen by some as a beautiful image of our time, by others as a provocation.
Brizida Gjikondi's reaction, calling this an insult to the citizens of Tirana, shifted the debate from decorum to values. And in fact, the question is not about the two girls. The question is: what does public space represent?
Is it a mirror of the majority, or a space where even the minority has the right to be seen?
Is Valentine's Day just a heteronormative holiday, or a celebration of love in all its forms?
