Under a microscope, kidney stones look rough and sharp-pointed, like tiny shards of glass. They form when minerals like calcium oxalate crystallize in concentrated urine and grow layer upon layer.
Their sharp edges scratch and irritate the very delicate lining of the kidney and ureter, therefore causing severe pain during movement.
Basic treatments include drinking water, using painkillers, medications that help dissolve some types of stones, as well as procedures such as lithotripsy, which breaks the stones into smaller pieces.
