Study: Postpartum women more at risk of depression and psychosis

A new analysis published in the scientific journal Molecular Psychiatry has found that new mothers are more likely to experience mental health problems in the weeks after giving birth.
According to the study, which is based on data from 1.8 million births in Sweden between 2003–2019, the risk of depression is about 20% higher in the 5th to 15th weeks after birth. Meanwhile, the risk of psychosis is 6 to 7 times higher in the first weeks, and remains twice as high until the 20th week.
Experts emphasize that, unlike the temporary condition known as the "baby blues", postpartum psychosis is a serious disorder associated with hallucinations, delusions and confusion, but early treatment offers a full chance of recovery.
The study highlights the need for new mothers to be closely monitored in the first weeks after birth, as this period poses a high risk.
