Knowing more than one language may slow aging, new study finds

Forget creams and supplements, the secret to youth may be in the languages we speak! A study of over 80,000 Europeans found that people who speak several languages age more slowly than those who speak only one.
According to neuroscientist Agustin Ibanez from Trinity College Dublin, each additional language offers measurable protection against aging, as using several languages trains the brain, improves memory, concentration and mental flexibility.
The benefits also extend to the emotional and social aspects: multilingualism increases the sense of belonging, reduces stress, and helps overall health.
In the EU, 75% of adults speak more than one language.
“Language is not only a cultural bridge,” says Ibanez, “but also a biological tool for a longer, healthier life.”
