Tsunami warnings pushed New Zealanders out of their homes as they fled the South Pacific. This after an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale hit the Kermadec Islands region about 620 miles from the two main islands of New Zealand. The strong earthquake caused other tremors with magnitude 7.4 and 7.3.

Due to the Tsunami alert, long queues of cars were created by citizens fleeing the ocean shore. The videos and photos posted show the strong wind mostly in Tokomaru Bay near Gisborne.
The National Emergency Management Agency in New Zealand reported that the threat had passed and people could return to their homes, though they should continue to avoid the beaches as the waves could rise more than three meters.
