Croatian free diver Vitomir Maričić has set a new Guinness record by holding his breath underwater for 29 minutes and 3 seconds, almost five minutes longer than the previous record.
Before undertaking the test, he inhaled pure oxygen for 10 minutes, a process called denitrogenation, which fills the blood with up to five times the normal level of oxygen.
The record was set at the Hotel Bristol in Opatija, Croatia, in front of 100 spectators and five judges.
Maričić warns that this achievement is extremely dangerous without expert supervision, as oxygen and carbon dioxide toxicity can be fatal.
