The 2026 FIFA World Cup is reportedly entering a financial review phase. FIFA is considering a significant cut to its operating budget, which could exceed $100 million.
The decision comes at a time when speculation has increased about a possible withdrawal of Iran from the competition, which has prompted FIFA leaders to ask organizing offices in various countries, including the headquarters in Miami, to reduce expenses.
This move comes despite the fact that overall revenue from the tournament is expected to reach over $11 billion.
The 2026 edition will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, in an expanded format that is expected to be among the largest in the tournament's history.
For the 2023–2026 cycle, FIFA had forecast around $1.1 billion in operating expenses and a total budget of $3.7 billion. However, some of these forecasts are now being revised downwards.
