Albanian businesses use Artificial Intelligence more than the Region and the EU

Although Albania has a technological gap compared to the Region and EU countries, our businesses are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) more than those in the Western Balkans region, even more than the EU.

According to the latest report “Western Balkans Digital Economy and Society index 2024” by the Regional Cooperation Council, Albanian businesses lead the Western Balkans in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies. The data shows that in 2023, 12% of Albanian enterprises will use AI, a level more than double the regional average of only 5% and above the European Union average of 7%.

In addition to AI, Albanian businesses are widely using other technologies. For example, the use of data analytics involved 33% of enterprises, placing Albania above the regional average of 31% and at a level comparable to the EU, 32%. E-invoicing is also consolidated, with 54% of businesses using it, compared to 41% in the region and 38% in the EU.

Albania also leads with a higher percentage of companies using social networks and other digital communication tools than neighboring countries.

However, the KBR report highlights that the increased use of advanced technologies is not always accompanied by sufficient digital skills of the workforce, which may limit long-term benefits.

Albanian businesses are more likely to use technology to avoid the costs that are coming from the shortage of labor in the country. Regional surveys have shown that Albanian businesses are the most concerned about the lack of staff at all levels.

In 2023, only 43% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the 6 Western Balkan countries achieved a basic level of digital intensity, compared to 58% in the EU.

Online engagement through social media is gradually improving. In 2023, 26% of enterprises in the Region used two or more types of social media platforms, slightly below the EU average of 31%. The use of advanced digital technologies also shows progress in 2023.

Cloud computing usage increased to 26%, however it remains behind the EU average of 38%.

Adoption of data analytics increased significantly to 31%, almost narrowing the gap with the EU, from just 6% in 2020.
