This will happen once it is officially updated to the US Geographic System.

This change will be visible to users in the US, while the "Gulf of Mexico" will remain in Mexico.

Outside the US and Mexico, users will see both names.

Google Maps, owned by Alphabet, will also change the name of Mount Denali in Alaska to Mount McLean.

"As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now be officially known as the Gulf of America and the highest peak in North America will once again bear the name Mount McKinley," the Department of the Interior announced on Google Maps.
