On April 3, 1973, 52 years ago today, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made history by making the first call on a mobile phone. Walking down a New York City street, he called a rival from Bell Labs to tell him he had won the competition for the first portable phone.
Back then, the phone weighed almost 1.1 kg and its battery lasted only 30 minutes – but that didn't stop the communication revolution. Today, half a century later, mobile phones have become an inseparable part of our lives.
So, the next time you complain about your phone battery running out quickly, remember that people used to carry devices the size of a brick to make a phone call!
