The famous American presenter Jerry Springer dies at the age of 79

Jerry Springer, the controversial presenter, a symbol of American television with fights, insults and revelations of treason, has passed away.

Springer, who hosted "The Jerry Springer Show" for nearly three decades, died Thursday at his home in Chicago.

Springer was born in Highgate, London, in 1944 to Jewish refugees from a region of Germany.

He started his professional life first in politics, serving as an adviser to Robert F Kennedy and then became mayor of Cincinnati. He then switched to television journalism. He became a reporter at a local television station and worked his way up to become an anchor.

In 1991, The Jerry Springer Show began as a mainstream talk show focused on US social issues and politics hosted by the then mild-mannered Springer.

In the late 1990s, the show topped the US TV ratings, even beating Oprah. The show ended in 2018.
