Lake Shkodra declared a UNESCO heritage site

Lake Shkodra has been officially declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, receiving one of the most important international accolades in the field of nature protection and biodiversity.

The decision comes after the application submitted by Albania at the end of 2025, with the aim of strengthening global recognition of the lake's special ecological values, the richness of its natural habitats and the role it plays in preserving environmental balances in the region.

Shared between Albania and Montenegro, Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans and one of the most important areas for biodiversity in Southeastern Europe. It is home to a large number of bird, fish and plant species, including rare or endangered species.

With the new status as a Biosphere Reserve, the aim is to strengthen the long-term protection of this ecosystem, while simultaneously promoting sustainable development, nature tourism, and cross-border cooperation between the two countries.

It is expected that this UNESCO assessment will bring more international attention, funding, and projects dedicated to environmental conservation and the development of local communities living near the lake.

In addition to its ecological values, Lake Shkodra remains one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country, thanks to its landscapes and great potential for ecotourism.

This status is seen as an important step for the protection and promotion of one of the most precious natural assets of Albania and the region.
