Italian seismologist: The earthquake displaced Turkey by 3 meters

The head of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy, Carlo Doglioni, has stated that Turkey has moved three meters after the catastrophic earthquake that struck it in the early hours of the morning.

Doglioni added that the risk is that there may be other more intense shocks.

"From the estimates we have, and which are gradually being processed, we know that the tremor was activated for 150 kilometers with a displacement of at least three meters. Everything happened in just a few seconds, radiating this 7.9 magnitude earthquake. We are talking about a sliding movement, the fault plane is vertical, therefore during an earthquake a horizontal displacement of rock blocks is observed. Two boundaries that move relative to each other in a dependent manner. In other words: it is as if Turkey had moved to the Southwest and Arabia to the Northeast. The alarm is closed. This does not mean that it cannot be revived by landslides. But it would be a scenario that has to do with the seas surrounding Turkey. Events of this type can be followed by equally important if not more important events. It happened right in Turkey in the earthquake that hit the country in 1999. What I can say is that they are movements that never stop. The "epidemic" behavior is known, but the earthquake affected a structure far from the Italian geological system. This does not mean that we should not keep our attention high, because Italy has areas with an ever-present geological vitality", said Carlo Doglioni.
